Event details

Are you a parent or carer of a child or young person with additional needs or disabilities who attends a mainstream school without an EHCP?

Dear Parent/Carer,

Surrey County Council (SCC) are developing a new parent/carer and young people’s OAP guide to help parent/carers and young people understand what Ordinarily Available Provision (OAP) is and how schools use it to support children’s needs as they arise.

We would like to capture parent/carers’ feedback to help shape the parent/carer and young people’s OAP guide, ensuring it is useful and easy to understand.

How to get involved

Why should I get involved?

By getting involved you are:

  • helping to represent what parent/carers want from the new parent/carer OAP guide to the OAP document, enabling SCC to ensure that the new parent/carer OAP guide to the OAP document reflects parents needs
  • supporting ongoing work to build and develop trusting relationships that recognise parents/carers know their children best
  • ensuring the guidance is accessible for parent/carers to understand
  • getting the opportunity to ask questions about OAP guidance which will help inform the content of the parent/carer guide

Background
OAP is part of a school’s approach to inclusive education based on individual needs. SCC have OAP guidance for professionals which they are currently reviewing and updating.

The review work, in collaboration with schools, health professionals, children and young people, started during the Autumn 2024 term. Through coproduction the guidance has been updated in terms of its language, content, strategies of support and examples of good practice.

The process of reviewing the OAP guidance for professionals has highlighted a need for a specific parent/carer and young people’s OAP guide to aid understanding of what OAP is and how schools use it to support children. The parent/carer and young people’s OAP guide will be made available on the Surrey Local Offer website.

The online group meetings will be led by the Commissioning team within Early Years and Education at SCC and hosted by Family Voice Surrey (FVS).
